Grant will improve facilities at club
Canterbury rugby club has been given a £50,000 grant to improve its facilities.
The grant from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund will go toward new changing facilities.
Canterbury chairman Giles Hilton was delighted with the news.
“The grant will enable us to complete a two year refurbishment of facilities on and off the field,” he said. “It is the last piece in the jigsaw and will help to bring a lot more people into the game”
The club plans to design a totally new changing area with separate facilities for men, women and children of all ages. Work is scheduled to begin in May next year and to be completed by July ready for the start of the 2013/14 season..
When it is finished the club expects to almost double within five years the 19,000 users who currently use its Merton Lane North headquarters.
Sport England Chair Richard Lewis said: “This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in the Canterbury area.
“It shows we are offering the legacy that people want for their local community. For hundreds of clubs and thousands of people, 2012 will be the year their local sports facilities got better.”
Hilton added: “This news could not have come at a better time as we have just been promoted back to National Division 2. It also coincides with a surge of interest in rugby with World Cup coming to England in 2015 and the following the game rugby is back as an official Olympic sport.”
